Remove an image background in PowerPoint and Slides
Cutting a product, headshot or logo out of its background makes a slide look far cleaner. PowerPoint has a built-in tool for it, Google Slides has one on eligible plans, and there are simple workarounds for the rest.
Remove a background in PowerPoint (Windows and Mac)
- Select the pictureClick the image on your slide. The Picture Format tab appears in the ribbon.
- Click Remove BackgroundChoose Picture Format > Remove Background (on some Mac versions the tab is just Format). PowerPoint guesses the subject and colours everything it plans to delete in magenta.
- Fix what it got wrongOn the Background Removal tab, click Mark Areas to Keep and draw over parts of the subject that turned magenta. Click Mark Areas to Remove and draw over leftover background. Short strokes work better than careful outlines.
- Keep the resultClick Keep Changes. If it went badly, Discard All Changes puts the photo back.
The quick alternative: Set Transparent Color
If the background is one flat colour (a logo on white, for example), select the picture, go to Picture Format > Color > Set Transparent Color, then click the background. It removes that single colour everywhere in the image, so it can punch holes in a subject that contains the same colour. It works best on simple graphics, not photos.
Remove a background in Google Slides
- Select the imageClick the picture on your slide.
- Open Edit imageClick Edit image > Remove background in the toolbar, or go to Format > Image > Edit image > Remove background.
- Check the edgesZoom in on hair, fingers and fine details. If the result is wrong, press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z). Note that Reset image does not bring the background back; use Undo or File > Version history.
If your Google account does not have it
- Remove the background in PowerPoint, then copy the picture (right-click > Save as Picture as a PNG) and insert it in Slides.
- Use a background removal tool, save as PNG (JPEG cannot store transparency), and upload with Insert > Image.
- For logos on white, look for a PNG or SVG version on the company's press or brand page instead.
Getting a clean result
| Problem | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Parts of the subject disappear | Subject and background are similar colours | Mark Areas to Keep over the missing parts; start from a photo with more contrast |
| Halo or fringe around the edge | Soft edges blend with the old background | Place the image on a background colour close to the original, or add a subtle shadow to hide the edge |
| Hair looks cut out with scissors | Fine detail is hard for any tool | Crop tighter, use a smaller size on the slide, or pick a photo against a plain wall |
| The whole image is greyed out | It is a vector or the image is grouped | Ungroup it, or convert to a picture first (copy, then Paste Special as PNG) |
| White box appears when exported | It was saved as JPEG | Export or save the cutout as PNG |
Choosing a photo that cuts out cleanly
Every background removal tool, from PowerPoint's to dedicated apps, does better with some photos than others. Before you spend ten minutes marking areas, check whether a different photo would save you the trouble:
- Strong contrast between subject and background: a person in a dark jacket against a light wall is easy; a beige product on a beige table is hard.
- Sharp focus on the edges of the subject. Blurry edges become fuzzy halos.
- A plain background. Busy scenes, patterns and other people behind the subject all make the tool guess.
- Enough resolution. Tiny images from the web have few pixels at the edge to work with; start from the largest version you can find.
- Simple outlines. Loose hair, fur, glass and see-through objects are the hardest cases. If the photo is for a headshot row, ask people for a photo against a plain wall.
What to do with a cutout on the slide
A cutout gives you layout options a rectangular photo cannot. Place a product on a solid colour that matches your accent, overlap a person slightly with a large headline for a magazine look, or line up several cutouts on a shared baseline so they appear to stand on the same floor. Add a soft shadow (Picture Format > Picture Effects > Shadow in PowerPoint, Format options > Drop shadow in Google Slides) to stop the subject looking pasted on. Keep the scale consistent: if you show three products, size them realistically relative to each other, or make them all the same height.
When a cutout is worth it
Cutouts work best for product shots, team headshots arranged in a row, and logos placed on coloured slides. They are not worth it for scenery or any photo where the background tells part of the story. If you have a row of headshots, remove all backgrounds and put the people on the same colour circle or square so the set looks consistent.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Remove Background greyed out in PowerPoint?
The file is probably a vector graphic (SVG, AI, WMF, DRW), part of a group, or not a picture at all (for example a shape with a picture fill). Ungroup it or insert it as a regular PNG or JPEG picture.
Can I remove a background in Google Slides for free?
Google's built-in Remove background needs an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI subscription. On a free account, remove the background elsewhere, save as PNG and insert that image.
How do I save a picture with a transparent background from PowerPoint?
Right-click the picture after removing the background and choose Save as Picture, then pick PNG. PNG keeps transparency; JPEG does not.
Can I undo a background removal later?
In PowerPoint, select the picture and choose Picture Format > Reset Picture, or open Remove Background again and discard changes. In Google Slides, use Undo or version history, since Reset image does not restore it.
Does removing a background make my PowerPoint file smaller?
Not by itself. PowerPoint keeps the original picture so you can undo the removal later. To shrink the file, use Picture Format > Compress Pictures and tick Delete cropped areas of pictures, which also discards the editing data.
Or let the whole deck take care of itself
InstaPresentation finds photos for every slide, removes backgrounds in one click and keeps the layout tidy. Export to PowerPoint when you are done.
